Riebeeck Kasteel

Driving north from Cape Town towards the Cedarberg mountains, we stopped in the town of Riebeeck Kasteel in the Swartland, the huge fertile valley between mountain ranges where wheat, vines, fruit and vegetables are grown.

We took a walk around the little town, almost deserted in the hottest part of the day, with shabby but cheerful facades and rietdakke (reed ceilings) to protect against the intense heat ...

... and sat on the stoep of the Royal Hotel, the oldest licensed hotel in the Western Cape, for koffie en koek ...
