Bamberg

I don't think I'd ever heard of Bamberg before stopping by en route to Weimar, yet it's a World Heritage city and a little gem in Bavaria.

In the early evening we walked around twisty cobblestone streets laid out up and down seven hills

and had sight of the town's unique (and most photographed) sight before darkness fell - the Altes Rathaus, old town hall, which spans the river

Half timber, one side painted with a baroque fresco, the building itself forms an island in the middle of the river.

We popped into the 13th century cathedral

but had no time to stop at the Weinschänke for Bamberg's famous smoked beer, as we were heading further east.
